How to Remove a Wallpaper That Won’t Come Off Your Screen

Stuck with a wallpaper you can’t get rid of? There’s no delete button — you remove one by setting another in its place. Here’s how on every device, plus what to do when it won’t change.

A wallpaper never gets “deleted” like a file — you remove the old one by choosing a new one. That’s why it can feel stuck: people hunt for a delete button that isn’t there. Here’s the two-tap version for every device.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings › WallpaperTap Add New Wallpaper.
  2. Pick a replacementChoose a photo, colour or design and tap Add.
  3. Remove old onesTo clear a saved lock screen, touch and hold the lock screen, swipe to it, and tap the trash icon.

Android

  1. Long-press the home screenTap Wallpaper & style.
  2. Choose a new imageApply it to the home screen, lock screen, or both — the old one is replaced instantly.

Windows & Mac

On Windows, right-click the desktop › Personalize › Background › Browse photos. On Mac, open System Settings › Wallpaper and pick a new image. In both cases the old wallpaper is gone the moment the new one loads.

When it won’t change

If the wallpaper snaps back or refuses to update, it’s almost always one of these: Low Power Mode (turn it off on iPhone), a motion / Reduce Motion setting, or a cached image — a quick restart clears that nine times out of ten.

Heads up: A blurry wallpaper usually isn’t stuck — it’s just too small for your screen. The fix is a higher-resolution image, not a settings change.

Ready for a fresh one?

Now that the old wallpaper’s gone, grab a crisp 4K or 8K replacement — free and sized for your screen.
